President Zardari, Polish minister discuss defense and economic ties

ISLAMABAD, October 06: President Asif Ali Zardari and visiting Polish minister Tomasz Siemoniak met at Aiwan-e-Sadr on Tuesday to review bilateral relations and explore expanding cooperation in security, defense, and trade, according to a press release from the Presidency.

During the meeting, President Zardari stated that Pakistan values its ties with Poland based on mutual respect and expressed hope that the visit by Siemoniak—who serves as Minister, Member of the Council of Ministers, and Coordinator of Special Services—would turn existing cooperation into a multifaceted partnership.

Zardari appreciated Poland’s recognition of Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts during the recent US-Iran crisis, reiterating that Pakistan remains committed to resolving disputes through dialogue to maintain regional and global stability. Commending Poland’s economic growth since 1991 into a trillion-dollar economy, the president called for enhanced interactions between business communities, frequent leadership exchanges, and deeper people-to-people contacts.

The president also expressed gratitude for Poland’s support regarding Pakistan’s status under the European Union’s GSP Plus scheme and voiced confidence in continued bilateral coordination at multilateral forums.

Siemoniak, conveying greetings from Poland’s president and prime minister, praised Pakistan’s role in regional peace. He noted that Warsaw wishes to strengthen political, economic, and security cooperation, specifically in counter-terrorism, immigration, and defense.

Siemoniak highlighted historical military ties, noting the contributions of Polish Air Force personnel to Pakistan. The presidency confirmed that an Islamabad street is being named in honor of Air Commodore Wladyslaw Józef Marian Turowicz, a veteran of the Polish Air Force and Royal Air Force who arrived in Pakistan in 1948 alongside 30 Polish aviation specialists to help establish the Pakistan Air Force.

The Polish delegation included Ambassador Maciej Pisarski, Military Counter-Intelligence Service Head Gen. Jaroslaw Strózyk, Foreign Intelligence Agency Deputy Head Col. Waldemar Mularczyk, and Prime Minister’s Chancellery National Security Department Director Col. Maciej Matysiak. Pakistani officials present included Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, Senator Sherry Rehman, Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, and former federal minister Naveed Qamar.
