The high-level diplomatic and trade talks, scheduled to run over three intensive days from October 19 to October 21, are being hosted at the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) headquarters in Islamabad. According to official ministry statements, the Canadian delegation visiting the federal capital is led by the High Commissioner of Canada to Pakistan, while the Pakistani delegation is headed by the Secretary of the SIFC. Representatives and technical experts from various relevant government ministries and departments of both countries are actively participating in the working sessions.

Opening the formal proceedings in Islamabad, the Secretary of the SIFC delivered welcoming remarks to the visiting Canadian delegation, expressing appreciation for the Canadian High Commissioner and his negotiating team for their continued engagement and steadfast commitment to the bilateral process. The SIFC secretary emphasized that the successful conclusion of the bilateral investment treaty would represent a vital milestone in modern diplomatic and commercial relations between Islamabad and Ottawa. He noted that a finalized treaty would provide investors from both nations with a predictable, transparent, and stable legal framework, which in turn is expected to significantly boost the flow of foreign direct investment into key domestic sectors.

In response, the Canadian High Commissioner thanked the Government of Pakistan for hosting the current round of talks and commended the host administration for its constructive, collaborative approach. The High Commissioner reaffirmed Canada’s strong institutional commitment to achieving an early, balanced, and mutually beneficial agreement that effectively safeguards the economic interests of both countries and supports their respective business communities. Both negotiating teams expressed mutual interest and readiness to systematically review follow-up items carried over from previous rounds, committing to utilize the three-day schedule to cover maximum ground and move steadily toward the finalization of the treaty text.

Strategic Sectors and Economic Partnership

During introductory meetings held alongside the formal negotiations, the Canadian delegation outlined key commercial areas experiencing strong interest from Canadian enterprises operating abroad. Discussions specifically highlighted significant investment potential across several strategic sectors within Pakistan, including renewable energy development, mineral exploration and mining, modern agricultural technologies, and the information technology sector.

Both delegations concurred that a finalized Bilateral Investment Treaty would naturally complement the steadily growing economic ties between Pakistan and Canada, providing a secure foundation for expanded commercial engagement. Officials expressed confidence that the current three-day round will prove productive, maintaining strong momentum as both governments work toward deepening bilateral economic cooperation and long-term trade partnership.
