Ambassador Syed Haider Shah has been appointed as Pakistan permanent representative to the United Nations in New York, succeeding the former envoy.

ISLAMABAD — Ambassador Syed Haider Shah has been designated as Pakistan’s new Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, according to diplomatic sources familiar with the development.
The position at the international body became vacant following the elevation of the previous permanent representative to the office of the foreign secretary. Official notification procedures and diplomatic clearances are currently underway in Islamabad and New York to formalize the transition.
Ambassador Shah brings extensive bilateral and multilateral diplomatic experience to the prominent UN assignment. He is currently serving as Pakistan’s Ambassador to the Netherlands, where he has managed diplomatic, legal, and institutional relations with international bodies based in The Hague, including international courts and tribunals.
Prior to his diplomatic tenure in Europe, Ambassador Shah held several key regional and bilateral assignments. He served as Pakistan’s Ambassador to Nepal, where he focused on regional cooperation under the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation framework and bilateral economic ties. He also served as Deputy High Commissioner in New Delhi, navigating complex diplomatic channels during a sensitive phase of bilateral relations between Islamabad and New Delhi.
Diplomatic observers note that the appointment comes at a critical juncture for multilateral diplomacy. Pakistan maintains an active posture across various UN organs, including the General Assembly, the Security Council when serving elected terms, and numerous economic, social, and human rights committees. The Permanent Mission in New York plays a central role in articulating Islamabad’s foreign policy positions on key global issues, international peace and security, sustainable development goals, and regional geopolitical developments.
Ambassador Syed Haider Shah Prepares for New Multilateral Role
The transition at the UN mission follows a series of high-level diplomatic realignments within Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry. The previous permanent representative vacated the New York post after being appointed as the thirty-fourth Foreign Secretary of Pakistan, creating a vacancy that necessitated a seasoned career diplomat with broad multilateral and bilateral exposure.
Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials have not yet announced an official date for Ambassador Shah’s departure from The Hague or his formal assumption of office at the UN headquarters in Manhattan. However, preparations for the handover are reported to be proceeding through diplomatic channels.
During his career, Ambassador Shah has engaged extensively on issues relating to international law, disarmament, human rights, and economic diplomacy. His background in both South Asian regional affairs and European multilateral diplomacy is expected to guide his engagement with UN member states and specialized agencies.
The Permanent Mission of Pakistan to the United Nations remains one of the country’s most critical diplomatic outposts, coordinating closely with foreign ministries, international organizations, and diaspora networks across North America. The mission oversees negotiations on international treaties, peacekeeping contributions, and financial and administrative matters within the UN system.
Further announcements regarding the diplomatic reshuffle, including Ambassador Shah’s replacement in the Netherlands and the schedule for his arrival in New York, are expected to be released by the Foreign Ministry in due course.
